JAS from Bitter Balcony tells you all about it.

The Cheese of gore: Confessions of a Gorehound

Look up the definition of “gorehound” in the source of totally accurate information that is Urban Dictionary and you’ll see two definitions. For sake of not having a six-page post, the short one reads: “An individual that is immersed in the genre of horror that revolves around intense displays of gore and mayhem; Films like ‘Dawn of the Dead’ and ‘Zombie’. Someone that loves b-horror films that have poor plot and acting, and watch for the scenes of extreme violence and gore. Anyone who thinks that Lucio Fulci is a genius.”

It’s going overboard to label Fulci as a genius, but the man does have some brilliant ways to shoot gore. Scenes like the endless puking of guts in “City of the Dead” or the eye meets stick scene in “Zombi.” However, Fulci might just qualify as a genius (not your standard Albert Einstein variety) in the George Romero (back in the day) mold. Fulci’s movies are slow and not overly complex. What makes them great, aside from Fabio Frizzi’s musical scores, is the fantastic gore.

Gore is a lot like a squirt of Easy Cheese (the “good” stuff in a can) on top of, well, anything. You can have something bland and barely edible, but once you blast it with a dollop of Easy Cheese, you’re golden. Classic horror movies that rely on gore are great because of that. For gorehounds like myself, these potentially flat films become cultlike thanks to heads that explode on queue.

On rare occasion you get a film like John Carpenter’s remake of “The Thing,” a standout among remakes because it was handled by talented folks with respect to the source material. “The Thing” is a great film, from casting and directing to writing and scoring. Add in some truly amazing makeup effects, and you get one of my personal favorite films of all time. “The Thing” is an exercise in masterful filmmaking coupled with the old-school special effects that make a gorehound like me shriek like a little girl with glee.

Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) has grown into a photo-realistic and cheap filmmaking method, but nine times out of 10, it doesn’t match the work of people like Tom Savini, Robin R. Bottin, Stan Winston, and Rick Baker. Filmmakers like Paul S.W. Anderson use CGI for movies like “Resident Evil” and it just doesn’t work as well. Uwe Boll takes poorly made CGI to a whole new basement level. Sure this is a different caliber filmmaker, but when a few zombies pull out a ton of guts and a whole chicken like in “Day of the Dead,” the bar is set pretty high. I mean, it’s a whole chicken! How did the guy even eat that?

“Ichi the Killer” is an example of how CGI can be used artistically, making blood ‘n’ guts almost like paint on a canvas (bodies sliced in half or body parts and blood shooting out a door). When the exaggeration reaches such heights it’s hard not to laugh, sit back and enjoy the show. This goes for most popular Takashi Miike movies. He’s a modern master of splatter film making (not to say there aren’t “those” moments).

Some people see gorehounds as sick bastards – and to that most of us say “thank you.” However, what is being appreciated here is not the actual violence or mutilations, but the art that goes into making it believable and just fun to watch because of it’s exaggerated nature. Say what you will about gore, but no one can deny the dedication that goes into sculpting and painting a replica of a human head – only to shove some dynamite and blood in it and watch it go boom.

The first career (aside from being a cop like the ones in “CHIPS”; yeah I’m getting old) I wanted was to create horror movie effects. I still have my first issue of Horror FX magazine showing how Freddy Krueger’s makeup was done, step by step. I was fascinated! The first time I realized how much I dug horror effects was when I was eating spaghetti while watching some cheeseball sci-fi horror film. My mother walked into the room to see me eating a giant meatball, while a laser cut the top of a guy’s head off leaving the lower jaw and neck shooting blood. The poor slob rises up, runs around and somehow screams. My horrified mother took a look at me and said, “This doesn’t bother you?” To which I replied, “Nope. It’s cool” – and took another bite of my meatball. She shook her head and walked away. While I sat there it dawned on me that this may not be normal behavior… but who cares? It was too much fun.

While a movie should never rely on any one thing to make it great, gore always seems to be the crutch that many can use to keep on their feet. And for that I will always love exploding heads.

The microphones will be silent. You can make a difference!

Hoyt Room 2 Part 2: Let’s Make a Movie: Shoot It!
You were there for Part 1, right, where we figured out what we needed and planned this movie all out? Quick! Time travel! In part 2, we shoot like mad weasels, because there’s not much time and if we’re going to make a movie at light speed, then we have to move at the speed of light! So, don’t be late, or you’ll just see red-shifted versions of us. The key to making a movie, of course, is to get the footage in the can! Or, “box”, actually, because we’re shooting video. But you know what we mean.

Everett Ballroom 2 Help! A Bear Is Eating Me!
“Global warming and the expansion of North America’s population are bringing bears and humans together with unprecedented frequency. What is the future of our relationship with these awesome creatures? Must we eat one another? Can’t we all just get along?

Portland, Oregon author MYKLE HANSEN addresses that question among others in his novel HELP! A BEAR IS EATING ME! — a schadenfreude-laden farce of American hubris in the face of Nature and her servants, specifically the wild bears of Alaska.

During his one-hour presentation, Mr. Hansen, a fixture of Portland’s literary and spoken-word scenes, will deliver an enlightening and entertaining slideshow on the shifting dynamic of the human-bear relationship in this era of global warming, economic meltdown and obesity.

Hoyt Room 1 How do the Books go to the Movies?!
You really want your author to get that break so you can see their work on the big screen and they can start making the big bucks. But how is that done and why don’t more of them do it? And once the process starts how come so many movies are so DIFFERENT than the book that made them possible? That’s what we are here to explain. Directors and authors explain the process of getting words from paper to screen; the excitement, the honor, the frustration and the joy.

Everett Ballroom 3 All Tomorrow’s Tentacles: The Future Of Cthulhu
Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos barely kept him in navy beans, but has grown to become the greatest cult phenomenon nobody else has heard of. But is the latest resurgence of the Cthulhu canon a sign that the stars are right at last, or just that we’re fresh out of new ideas? What sinister influence compels artists and authors to this bleak, mind-blasting stew of pulp existentialism, and what terrors can Rl’yeh and Cthulhu still hold for audiences trapped in a world besieged by oil-rig apocalypses and tentacle-porn?
For decades horror has been considered a ghetto genre by “real” filmmakers and literary fiction. But those of us who love it know that there is more to it than just girls screaming and lots of blood. The fact of the matter is that many people, even “normal folks,” have a soft spot for a horror film or two. So how can you prove to friends and family who claim to “not like scary movies” that the genre is just as serious as the last Oscar winning movie?

Hoyt Room 2 Part 3: Let’s Make a Movie: Edit It!
Let’s make a movie! You were there for Part 2, right, where we shot video like crazy? Quick! Time travel! In part 3, we show you a little about editing, how we put all that crazy footage down and make it into a movie that makes some kind of sense. Actually, we hope it makes some
kind of sense. We never really know. If you bought a computer within the past two years, chances are excellent that you have more digital video editing power at your fingertips than has ever been subject to the hands of Ordinary People. Learn about using this power for Good.
Or Evil. We don’t care, because we only use it for Fun. The key to making a movie, of course, is editing.

D.N.A. Designs is a new fast way to approach a world that demands true style. Born from the streets I grew up on, I was that dirty punk rock kid sitting on the street corner sewing on patches on my pants that I got at the hardcore show the night before. Beer, drugs, and fast snotty music is what gave me inspiration to fill my leather jacket full of studs. And as I grew up and changed my life I kept my style and my beliefs. People would ask where I got my clothes and I would say I made them. Next thing you know I started making designs for other people. Now I have some help from my friends and my business partner, Talbot Shoemaker, so here we are, if you don’t like what we are doing I say to you, “Fuck off.” As things grew and became the creature that it is today, this creature that brings you sex, violence, fear, and joy. It is more than fashion its a way of life, built from a world in fashion by the dinosaurs of today. We are here to change the world and make it ok to be a hot, sexy mess. So please take my hand, and fuck you, let’s rodeo.

Morph Clothing is an online boutique of high-end streetwear currently based out of Toronto, Ontario. All of our current items are made and designed in Canada. Therefore, we only sell garments of the highest quality clothing for women and men.
The word Morph means to transform. It’s only fitting that Arlene decided to call her clothing line Morph because it applies to both her personal life and her design aesthetic: change + evolve.
Morph has been featured in Dazed and Confused, Redskin Mag, Gothic Beauty Magazine, Pulp Magazine, Skin Two Magazine, Goth Magazine and other print publications in featured Arlene as one of its up and coming new fashion designers. Morph is currently based in Toronto, Ontario. Developed for the ever-changing urban environment and guided by underground subcultures, Arlene mixes styles with her own interpretation of these cultures to create her designs; she follows a natural process of evolution with her designs. Arlene is constantly searching for new, interesting ideas to inspire her and she finds that her spur-of-the-moment ideas are usually the most successful.
The entire collection retails from $75-$300 and is currently available at selected boutiques in Canada, and the United States. For wholesale information, please contact us at info@morph-clothing.com.

It stars Jay Wesley Cochran, as the mad captain, and Kristen Springer as the leader of a small group of five women and one male pilot on their way to their next duty station. While on their journey their military transport crashes on a small uninhabited planet, but they are able to send out a s.o.s before crashing and destroying their transport. Shortly after crashing they are picked up by a old derelict space vessel which heard their s.o.s and came for them right away. Once picked up they find themselves trapped and unable to escape from the strange lifeless ship. From that moment on they find themselves fighting to stay alive while the ships demented mad capt. does everything possible to frighten and torment his female captives before killing and in some cases feeding on them while they are still alive.

Showbox and The Stranger present
Cinematic Titanic: Original Cast & Creator of Mystery Science Theater
3000

Day: Fri, Jun 11, 2010
6:00 and 9:30
Ticket Prices*: $36.00 ADV-$40.00 DOS
www.cinematictitanic.com

CINEMATIC TITANIC is the feature-length movie riffing show from the
creator and original cast of MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000. Like MST3K,
the show was created by JOEL HODGSON and features the same team that
first brought the Peabody award winning cult-classic series to life:
TRACE BEAULIEU (Crow, Dr. Forrester), J. ELVIS WEINSTEIN (Tom Servo, Dr.
Erhardt), FRANK CONNIFF (TV’s Frank), and MARY JO PEHL (Pearl
Forrester), Cinematic Titanic continues the tradition of riffing on ‘the
unfathomable’, ‘the horribly great’, and the just plain ‘cheesy’ movies
from the past.

Founded in late 2007, Cinematic Titanic is reconnecting the CT crew
with MSTies around the world as well as bringing new fans to the comedy
art form first introduced by this group 20 years ago on television.

Robert Englund joins Radio8Ball at Crypticon 2010!!! The Radio8Ball on Elm Street Show scheduled for Crypticon 2010’s opening night gala just got much more exciting. The popular synchronicity show hosted by Nightmare on Elm Street 4’s ANDRAS JONES was already set to feature questions from fellow cast members HEATHER LANGENKAMP (NOES 1&3,) AMANDA WYSS (NOES 1,) BROOKE BUNDY (NOES 3&4,) and the music of RODNEY EASTMAN (NOES 3&4) but now the show has added the big kahuna of the Nightmare franchise….ROBERT ENGLUND!!!! The original and finest Freddy Krueger will be Skyping in to the show (projected live onto a screen onstage) to ask his question for The Pop Oracle. Previous Celebrity Skype-Ins to Radio8Ball have included John C. Reilly, Seth Green, Nina Hartley & Weird Al Yankovic and these segments always provide an intimate glimpse into the minds of these iconic personalities.

For those unfamiliar with Radio8Ball, it is a musical divination show created by Andras Jones where questions are answered by picking songs at random and interpreting them like musical tarot cards. The Nightmare cast members will be asking their own questions for what Jones calls “The Pop Oracle” and 3 randomly chosen audience members will get a chance to ask their own questions.

According to Andras Jones, “It’s nothing like you have ever experienced before. We’re going to blow Robert’s mind.”

Robert is going to blow your mind! You have never seen Robert this way! Learn what the future holds for your favorite Nightmare man! Buy tickets now for this once in a lifetime show!!!
Everett Ballroom 1 Part 1: Let’s Make a Movie: Plan It!
In part 1, we go over the plan, figure out the gear, work up a story, write the script,
plan the shoot, and pretty much anything else we can think of. That’s right, from soup to nuts, we’re going to make an entire movie here at Crypticon. This is your chance to be a part of the annual fun and learn how to make a movie on a budget so tiny calling it “shoestring” would be an insult to shoestrings. The key to making a movie, of course, is good planning!

Hoyt Room 2 Proud to be a Horror Fan and How to Draw Others out of the Closet

You want to introduce your children to horror but let’s face it, this isn’t the most “family friendly” genre in the world. So what is out there? What movies and books are appropriate for growing minds? Is there anything actually made for children that isn’t corny or overtly silly? Are the days of Mary Downing Hahn and R.L. Stein done for? What happened to shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters? And how much damage do YOU think the next Saw film or Feast II will do to a youngster?
